A former student of South Africa’s Torq Zone Academy has taken a major step forward in cycling mechanic training after completing the prestigious UCI Level 3 Mechanics Course in Aigle, Switzerland.

Wihann Ehlers, a holder of the Cytech technical one, two and three qualifications, was accepted directly into the highest level of the UCI’s global training programme with the UCI Level 3 course, held at the World Cycling Centre, equipping mechanics with advanced technical skills to support professional teams and national federations.

Thanks in part to his Cytech qualifications and practical experience, Ehlers was fast-tracked past Levels 1 and 2 – an achievement that required a three-month application process and demonstrated expertise.

In a statement announcing the news, Torq Zone Academy said: "The strong technical foundation laid down through Cytech, especially Technical two, played a critical role in Wihann’s successful application. Watch this space - his journey is just beginning!"

The UCI Level 3 course covered similar topics to the Cytech technical two and three courses on high-end components such as Shimano 11/12 speed, SRAM Rival, and Campagnolo, as well as advanced hydraulic, headset, bottom bracket, gear, and suspension servicing. Ehlers’ goal is to one day join the South African national team and ultimately work with a World Tour outfit.
