Torq Zone celebrates 10 years as only Cytech training provider in Africa

Posted on 7 Nov 2024

Torq Zone Academy proudly celebrates 10 years as the pioneering institution for bicycle technician training in South Africa. Established as the only Cytech accredited training provider on the continent the Academy has continually set the benchmark for technical skills and professionalism, aligning South African bicycle servicing with global standards. This milestone underlines the role of Torq Zone in transforming the cycling expertise and providing cyclists with top-tier service they can rely on.

Torq Zone 10 Years

Cytech, the internationally recognised training standard for bicycle technicians, awards Torq Zone Academy graduates a highly respected certification. Over the past decade the Academy has delivered thousands of courses and certified hundreds of skilled technicians, whose expertise now fuel the success of workshops, retail spaces, and cycling events across the country, in Africa, and world-wide.

Jonathan Harrison, Director of the ACT, praised the partnership's success. He said: "We are delighted with the progress and success that Torq Zone Academy has achieved over these last 10 years and celebrate with them passing this remarkable milestone. As our first International training provider delivering Cytech, we couldn't have asked for a better partnership with an academy that continues to raise standards of bike mechanics and education over in South Africa while flying the flag for Cytech training in the Southern Hemisphere."

Adding to its prestigious credentials Torq Zone Academy is proud to hold accreditation with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), which underlines its commitment to delivering recognised, high-quality training. The Academy offers a suite of bicycle technician qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), ensuring that its programmes meet national standards and provide students with qualifications that hold significant value in the workforce. This accreditation further cements its position as a leader in the bicycle industry, equipping graduates with robust, nationally recognised skills that open doors to opportunities across the expanding cycling sector of South Africa.

What sets Torq Zone Academy apart is its forward-thinking curriculum, designed collaboratively with seasoned industry experts and continually updated to keep pace with innovations in bike technology, while maintaining a fundamental base. The Academy is equipped with cutting-edge tools and technology that replicate real-world repair challenges, preparing students to work confidently with complex bike mechanics. The partnership with Unior bike tools, manufactured to ISO and EU standards, further enhances the hands-on learning experience.

Torq Zone 10 Years

Looking to the future, Torq Zone Academy’s vision includes expanding opportunities for rural and township-based technicians, with plans to secure national skills funding. By collaborating with initiatives like the Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN), Qhubeka and national and independent cycle brands and shops, Torq Zone aims to support mobility movements, enhancing access to reliable bicycles in underserved communities and promoting social and economic change.

At Torq Zone every ride should be an unforgettable experience, powered by a perfectly tuned bicycle that reflects the expertise and dedication of its technician. As it embarks on its second decade Torq Zone Academy remains dedicated to advancing South African cycling by producing highly skilled bicycle technicians who embody the values of excellence and professionalism of the Academy.

Here is to another decade of innovation, impact, and leadership in South Africa’s cycling industry.
