I'm looking to become a bike mechanic and work on customers' bikes - what qualification(s) do I need?
Our Technical two qualification is widely consdiered as the industry standard for professional cycle technicians worldwide and is also the one that employers within the industry will tend to ask for, i.e. 'must hold Technical two or equivalent.'
You should be aiming to get to this level to be able to safely, competently, confidently and efficiently work on customer bikes, while adhering to relevant standards and legislation and also completing any relevant safety checks and paperwork.
To get to Technical two you would first need to complete Theory one and Technical one - practical.
-
Can I skip courses and book straight onto Technical two/Technical e-bike/Technical three?
In short, no, we expect those attending our courses to have completed the previous course as a pre-requisite. So before Technical two you should complete Technical one first, and then after Technical two you can go onto either Technical e-bike or Technical three, or both.
Training providers schedule courses separately, so you complete Technical one (which is comprised of Theory one (online) and Technical one - practical (2 days)) separately from Technical two (10 days) and so on.
-
I've been in the cycles industry/worked in a bike shop for many years, do I still need to complete the full course(s)?
If you feel that you already meet the competency of the Technical one or Technical two course(s), then we offer assessment only options for these two qualifications. This can be discussed with and booked through our training providers.
Having said this if you have never completed a formal bike mechanics qualification before then we would still recommend completing the full courses. Benefits of this include making sure that you are completing work to the current industry standards and manufacturer recommendations, ensuring that you have not picked up any bad habbits over the years, learning tips an tricks to make you more efficient at your job, and many more.
