Cytech technical three is designed for advanced cycle mechanics with strong technical knowledge and experience working on high-end bicycles and equipment. Cytech technical three is the highest attainable qualification in professional cycle maintenance in the UK.
Course structure and delivery
The Cytech technical three qualification is delivered in a modular
format to allow businesses and candidates the option to choose specific
training relevant to the products they are working on.
Technical three consists of five modules split into three core and two additional modules.
To obtain a full Cytech technical three qualification you need to complete all of the core modules plus one of the additional modules, however individual modules can be taken separately if required.

Who is Technical three for?
All the Technical three modules are designed for experienced cycle mechanics with a strong working knowledge of the cycle industry. Candidates should be qualified to at least Cytech technical two.
It is reasonably expected that candidates gain future experience after and on top of these modules (gained in the workplace and from manufacturer training courses), due to the vast nature of brand specific products and the continuous changes and developments that are being made within the industry.
How much does this course cost?
The Cytech technical three training and assessment course and its
individual modules are available to both cycle shop employees and
members of the public.

Cytech technical three - hydraulics
Cytech technical three - hydraulics is one of the core modules of the full Technical three course.
This module is aimed at individuals who have experienced riding with hydraulic disc brakes and have experienced hydraulic bleed procedures. It is also for those who are new to servicing a hydraulic brake calliper and lever and want a deeper understanding of how basic hydraulic principles are applied to both road and mountain bikes.
What does this module include?
This module lasts 2 days and covers the following:
Day one (MTB)
- Terminology, common problems and fault finding
- Brand specific brake bleed procedures
- Component maintenance
- Full service completed on a hydraulic brake system
- Hydraulic disc brake lever set-up (to rider preference)
Day two (road)
- Terminology, common problems and fault finding
- Brand specific brake bleed procedures
- Component maintenance
- Full service completed on a hydraulic brake system
- Hydraulic disc brake lever set-up (to rider preference)

Cytech technical three - suspension
Cytech technical three - suspension is one of the core modules of the full Technical three course.
This module is aimed at individuals with a knowledge of mountain bikes, but who are new to suspension servicing and want a deeper understanding of forks, rear shocks and hydraulic dropper posts.
What does this module include?
This module lasts 2 days and covers the following:
Day one (suspension forks)
- Terminology, common problems and fault finding
- Lower leg removal and oil change
- The different types of coil and air spring systems commonly used in suspension forks, service procedures, adjustment and set-up
- The different types of dampers commonly used in suspension forks, service procedures and set-up
Full service completed on a front fork
Day two (rear shocks and seatposts)
- Air can servicing, oil change and hardware replacement
- Brand specific damper oil change procedures
- Full service completed on a brand specific rear shock
- Full strip down and rebuild of a brand specific hydraulic dropper post, including hydraulic remote lever bleed

Cytech technical three - advanced wheel building
Cytech technical three - advanced wheel building is one of the core modules of the full Technical three course.
This module is aimed at individuals who are familiar with basic three cross wheel lacing who are aware of the correct tensioning and truing procedures. It aims to build upon this knowledge by offering the opportunity to work on more complex, higher-end wheel builds that come in varying spoke patterns.
What does this module include?
This module lasts 1 day and covers the following:
- The different lace patterns employed by manufacturers and how they relate to basic Cytech technical two wheel builds (includes the importance of a spoke tension metre when working on an advanced wheel)
- Advanced wheel lacing tips
- Calculating spoke lengths for offset rims and frames (including fat bikes)
- A full advanced wheel build (either MTB or road)

Cytech technical three - electronic gear systems
Cytech technical three - electronic gear systems is one of the additional modules of the full Technical three course.
This module is aimed at individuals who are new to electronic gear systems looking to know how to set-up, maintain, adjust and fault diagnose modern day bicycle electronic gear systems.
What does this module include?
This module lasts 1 day and covers the following (for both MTB and road):
- An overview of the different electronic gear systems currently available
- Shimano Di2 mechanical installation procedures
- Shimano Di2 on bike set-up using a junction box
- Shimano Di2 set-up using a PC
- Shimano Di2 fault diagnostics
- Applying Shimano Di2 firmware updates
- Shimano Di2 set-up to rider preferences
- Full set-up (on bike and PC), fault diagnosis and set-up to rider preference on one electronic gear system

Cytech technical three - tubular and tubeless tyre installation
Cytech technical three - tubular and tubeless tyre installation is one of the additional modules of the full Technical three course.
This module is aimed at individuals who have little or no experience with mounting tubular and tubeless systems and would like to know the correct procedure for doing so, along with being able to identify suitable glue and sealant types. It is also useful for those who have historically found it difficult to mount these systems in a way that offers optimal performance and those who would like to repair punctures in tubular tyres.
What does this module include?
This module lasts 1 day and covers the following:
- Background and explanation of tubular tyres including their benefits
- Preparing a new and used tubular rim prior to tyre installation
- Preparing a new and used tubular tyre prior to installation
- Adhering a new tubular tyre
- Adhering a pre-glued tubular tyre
- Final steps before riding and how to modify the adhesion processes for different riding types (i.e. road/CX/MTB), including tips on puncture prevention
- Repairing a punctured tubular
- Installing an open tubular tyre
- Background and explanation of tubeless systems including differences between the different standards and compatibilities, as well as their benefits
- Preparing a new and used tubeless rim prior to tyre installation
- Preparing a new and used tubeless tyre prior to installation
- Differences between mountain and road tubeless systems
- Fitting techniques for mounting and seating tubeless systems
- Mounting and seating a rim strip based system
- Adding and topping up sealant
- Final steps before riding and recommended tyre pressures
